About
Toohey Trail Run is a popular annual event that takes participants through the scenic trails of Toohey Forest, providing a unique running experience surrounded by the local flora and fauna. Each year, event graphics are updated and applied across a variety of collateral to create a fresh look. This year the event celebrates it's 10-year anniversary.
Our task is to create vibrant, nature-inspired event graphics for the 2026 Toohey Trail Run. The client is looking for graphics that are bright and engaging, with designs that complement the natural surroundings of Toohey Forest and celebrate a decade of bringing the community together and promoting health and wellbeing. Designs should appeal to a broad age range and feel inclusive.
These graphics will be applied to event collateral, including singlets, social media, emails, medals, and a version of the logo that incorporates your elements.
The target audience: event participants and supporters, Griffith University students and staff, and local corporate partners.
Research
I studied the Toohey Forest area from the official governmental resources and the Griffith University.
The Race Precinct Map (downloaded from the Griffith website) was really useful.
I have long been familiar with the lush jungle aesthetics featured in video games such as the DiRT series, Forza Horizon 3 (whose map is based on the south-eastern Australian coast, including the Gold Coast), and the Uncharted series.
I then researched existing singlet and advertising designs used for running events in Australia. Most examples incorporated real-world jungle elements such as trees, koalas, and native birds. Although visually appealing on flat surfaces like banners and placards, I believe singlet design requires a more minimalistic approach. Furthermore, the kits of world-class national and club teams clearly demonstrate a preference for patterns and graphical motifs rather than literal imagery.
My most important inspiration was Mexico’s 2026 World Cup football kit, which features 2D pattern work inspired by Aztec culture. A very similar motif had already appeared in Mexico’s 1998 World Cup kit, highlighting the effectiveness and enduring appeal of this design approach.
Initial Concepts
Similar to the other projects, I did mind mapping and then sketched the elements for references.
The social media tile layout was set.
